Electric bikes are not new. They have been around for decades. If you live in China or Europe, it’s a good bet that e-bikes are already a way of life for you.  

One of the first patents for the electric bike was registered in 1885 by an inventor named Ogden Bolton. Bolton did not sell any of those e-bikes today but some of the same designs can be seen in the e-bikes today. A rear hub motor with a battery centrally mounted on the frame.

There are 3 classes of electric bikes.

Class 1

Peddle assist with no throttle. 

Class 2

Throttle assisted but with a max speed of 20 miles per hour.

Class 3

Peddle assist only, no throttle with a max speed of 27 miles per hour.

E-bikes are the future of transportation. It lowers the barrier to biking. So if you are someone who is older or stressed out about the strains of biking, it really lowers the barrier. And its easier to justify getting on a bike and just ride. You are more likely to ditch your car or delete your Uber app if you know where you want to go without being sweaty and stressed out.

A study of the cognitive and psychological effects of outdoor cycling actually found the same results for e-bikes and traditional bikes.
